Surviving Potty Training With a Puppy

Potty training a puppy is one of the most horrible, annoying, frustrating things about getting a puppy. There are so many ways to do it – it is actually I highly debated topic.

Here is the way I potty trained Maeve, and avoided a TON of accidents in her crate.

  1. I had a lot of patience. This is literally required. You can’t get mad at every accident that your dog has.
  2. Let your dog out every 30 minutes. that way you can be sure that your dog doesn’t need to go
  3. Stay with your dog outside for at least five minutes.
  4. Don’t punish accidents in the house. if you aren’t there to witness it, you missed your chance. Your dog won’t understand why you are mad.
  5. Startle them! If you do catch your dog going in the house, then immediately startle them. Clap your hands, snap your fingers, whistle, say “Don’t do that!” in a loud tone, and as soon as they stop, take them outside right away.

Good luck!
