Squeeze n’ Freeze Kong Refills

Kongs have been a lifesaver as a puppy owner! The only thing that has driven me crazy about them is the fact that they take so long to make. Adding some peanut butter and calling it a day doesn’t always work. Maeve, my golden retriever puppy (She is nearly a year old already!), can finish those and fully clean her kong within ten minutes. So, inspired by the Buddy Budder packets they sell online, I decided to make refills all ready to go that would actually last longer than ten minutes.

Why Refills?

If you are in a rush and you need a kong that will last a good, long time, refills are a better option than making it from scratch EVERY TIME. Also, they work just as well when it comes to keeping your pet occupied!

Ingredients

  • Any Stopper

  • Any Filler

Directions

  • Grab kong and choose out of the filler ideas which one(s) you would like to do. If you choose to make your own, notice that we have at least one solid (apple, carrot, cucumber, etc.), and at least one liquid/puree (applesauce, yogurt, pumpkin puree). Also choose what to use as your stopper. The stopper will fill the large hole in the top of the kong for added challenge. Plug the bottom hole with a soft treat or piece of apple.
  • Cut up any fruit you are using. Take a piece of paper and hold it up to the kong. Use a pen to mark the edges of the hole (you’ll feel the depression). Use this to figure out what size you need to cut your apple or other fruit into for the topper. Next, take some medium or snack sized resealable plastic bags (I used the snack sized Ziplock bags). Spoon in about one normal-sized spoonful of your wet ingredient (or more if you have a large kong) into the bag. Next, sprinkle in the chopped solid ingredients and shut the bag. Massage it into the wet ingredient(s).
  • Put the stoppers into a bag and put it all in the fridge
  • When you decide to use the packets, I would make as many as possible and only use one at a time. Cut a hole in the bottom of the bag and use it as a piping bag to pipe the mixture into the kong. The hole needs to be pretty large so all the chunks of food can get through. If there are leftovers in the bag, you can tape it shut. Fill it to right below the large hole, then carefully push in the stopper.
  • Put it in a resealable plastic bag in case it leaks and freeze until solid (around 1-2 hours). If you need it right away, you can skip freezing them, but they won’t last as long
  • Give to your pup and watch them enjoy it!
